Newsletter: March 12, 2009 - Iowa...We Have a Problem!
Thursday, March 12, 2009 - The Iowa Legislature wants more jobs, but they dislike employers! We could argue forever which came first, the chicken or the egg. But that’s not the case when it comes to creating jobs. We need a willing employer prior to any job creation.
Every legislator steps to the microphone exclaiming Iowa needs more job opportunities, yet when it comes time to vote legislators side in favor of higher property taxes, more regulations, health insurance mandates, eliminating Iowa’s Right to Work Law, increased Workers Comp regulations and increasing Unemployment Insurance taxes. Put all of this “anti-business” legislation in front of an out-of-state employer that is interested in moving to Iowa or an Iowa employer who wants to expand, and it is like sending them a big red stop sign!
Is there any thing we can do as individuals during these tough times? I believe we need to look at generations before us, specifically Americans during the Great Depression. Some key qualities which allowed them to survive were self-reliance, strengthening of families, loyalty to their communities, and a strong faith in God and our country. During these tough times, focus on being a good role model for your children. Show them what is really important in life. I would encourage Iowan’s to revaluate their household budget. I understand incomes have and will continue to drop, so let’s plan for it. When you do have to purchase items, make EVERY opportunity to find that product or service in your own community. Money that you spend locally will remain in the community turning over as many as seven times. Let’s not forget charities, many may not be able to give money like before, but “your time” is like gold. Often your personal attention towards people during challenging times will bring more rewards than any amount of money.
And last but not least, remember…in tough times, politicians make promises, but God delivers.
